Alfred Hermida’s Talk: Between Hope and Disillusionment: A Framework for Journalism in the Age of AI

Date: November 19, 2024
Time: 18:30 CET

Attitudes on the role and impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on journalism tend to veer from fears about robots replacing journalists to hopes that machines could boost quality journalism. It is reminiscent of the early 2000s and 2010s when the internet and social media were either going to save journalism and foster a more democratic media, or create a dystopian era where clickbait flourished and viral falsehoods spread. The reality lies somewhere on the spectrum between hope and disillusionment. This talk provides a framework for journalists to think about and harness AI to better serve audiences.
